FAQs

Q: Does my child need to have a reading disability or dyslexia to work with HRA?

A: No, your child does not need to have reading disability or dyslexia to work with HRA. We work with all children to develop their reading skills.

Q: How long are the sessions?

A: Sessions are typically a total of 60 minutes. The first 50 minutes is one-on-one intensive reading instruction and the last 10 minutes is time to share with the parent the reading plan for the week.

Q: How many sessions should my child attend per week?

A: Two sessions a week would be ideal. However, we understand scheduling can get complicated so at least once a week also works.

Q: How much does a session cost?

A: A 60 minute session costs $100.

Q: What kind of testing does HRA do?

A: We are certified to administer, grade and interpret standardized tests in reading such as the CTOPP-2 and the TOWRE-2. These tests help identify roadblocks to reading mastery. We also use non-standardized tests that help drive instruction. Areas we test include phonological awareness, phonics, sight words, fluency and reading comprehension.

Q: When does testing take place?

A: Any needed testing occurs during the child’s first few reading sessions.

Q: How should I support my child’s learning at home?

A: Research confirms that parents reading to their children daily is very powerful for reading development. The more children read and are read to, the better their reading becomes. After each session we will let you know what you should work on with your child. Generally, your child will be working on sight words, reading, and phonological awareness for approximately 15 minutes per day with you at home.

Q: How do I cancel a session?

A: If your child is sick or if you need to cancel a session for any other reason, please let us know as soon as possible at 970 846-3625.

Q: Where can I learn more about reading?

A: Check out our resources page for additional information.

Q: How do I schedule an appointment with HRA?

A: Contact Becky@steamboatreadingacademy.com or at 970 846-3625.

Q: When do you provide intensive reading instruction?

A: We make every effort to work with your schedule to make times convenient for you and your child.

Q: When is payment due?

A: Payment is due at the start of each session unless prior arrangements have been made.

Q: My child has an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) at school. Can you help me understand it?

A: Yes, as a certified special education teacher I have years of experience designing and implementing IEPs.

Q: How would I know if my child needs intensive reading instruction?

A: Has your child’s teacher told you that your child is not reading at grade level or isn’t meeting grade level benchmarks? Does your child have a Colorado READ plan? Has your child been receiving reading interventions at school? Any of these factors may indicate your child will benefit from intensive reading instruction.
